Today was more like winter than mid fall: Cold, windy and wet. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it freezes tonight…or snows…or both. Thankfully, my “yarden” is all put to bed. The hoses are picked up, drained and hung; more delicate bulbs have been dug and put into a box. Some thingsContinue reading “PUT TO BED”

SCHOOL DAYS
The kids in my town had to go back to school this week. For some, this is the beginning of a 13-year journey, since kindergarten is required here; for others, this is the last stop before college or work…or whatever will come after high school. Do you remember your school days? The fashions (orContinue reading “SCHOOL DAYS”
SUNSHINE THROUGH THE WINDOW
The sun is far enough south now; it shines through my livingroom and dining room windows. It’s warmth enfolds me: Body, soul and spirit in a delicious embrace. BEAN SOUP
Bean soup is one of those things that gets whatever I take a notion to put into it. Tonight’s has black, pinto and white northern beans, kamut, lentils, cilanthro, cumin, bay leaf, a somewhat finely chopped carrot, onion, lots of garlic and a pinch of salt…oh yeah, and about half of a jalapeno pepper thatContinue reading “BEAN SOUP”
NOVEMBER
No snow on the ground yet; Overnight temperatures drop low enough to tease about frost. Vegetable soup tastes wonderful, Especially after a walk in the crisp air. Memories of autumns gone by Bring a warm glow to my mind. Expectancy builds as holidays draw near, Reminding me that winter will soon come.
OCTOBER
Orange pumpkins are piled up in fields and stores; Capturing imaginations, Teasing every child who anticipates Halloween. Odors of wood smoke and carotene drift through the air, Bringing back fond memories. Evenings are crisp, heralding overnight frost. Retreat into a warm house feels good.
AN AUTUMN WALK
The fields spread out in every direction. Grass waves and rustles, whispering a mysterious song as the wind blows through it. Autumn smells fill the air: Hints of pine, tamarac, sage; spice mixed with sweetness. Warm sunshine touches face and arms, only to be chased away by crisp breath. The sky is made of blueContinue reading “AN AUTUMN WALK”

Everybody knows that Months will be colder for a while; Blizzards and rainstorms will brew, Enveloping the world in white blankets, Running over into streets. Soon enough, however, Everything will start to awaken,Continue reading “SEPTEMBER”
