Community

o-talking-to-kids-about-race-facebookIf you read through my blogs, it might become evident that I have a passion for building community.  Strong towns and neighborhoods are crucial for our well being, especially now, when prejudice, threat of deportation and the possibility of having vital services cut loom so darkly.  That has inspired the following:

Coming together as citizens;
Overcoming differences and fear;
Making friends out of strangers
Moves us to be more clear:
Unity builds strength and safety;
No one can bully us then.
It truly is impossible
To turn against the one
You have come to know and love as a friend.

Truth

Let the truth be known;
Hold it in high esteem.
“Alternative facts” don’t make it;
They’re nothing more than schemes.

Let Truth rule your heart;
Honor and keep it near.
Even when Truth seems difficult;
Declare it loud and clear.

Great is this treasure,
A valued gift and right.
Let us join in preserving it;
Let us walk in its light.

Now, More Than Ever

I wrote this as I thought about the incredibly negative news that tends to invade our homes each day.

My hope and belief is, what gets presented is not how the majority of us think, feel or act.  It is important to realize this and keep the power of choice that we each have.

Now, more than ever,
The choices you make count:
Hold to high standards;
Raise the bar;
Don’t follow;
Instead, step up and lead out.

Now, more than ever,
Mercy and love we need;
Open your heart wide;
Give in love;
Don’t withhold;
Instead, give generously.

Now, more than ever,
We need to hear your voice,
As you speak the truth;
Say what’s right;
Without fear;
Let’s make the uplifting choice.

BUILD YOUR NATION

A nation is constantly being built, regardless of how long it has existed.  That is a different thought for most of us, who want to point to the founders and say that they did the whole job.  Unfortunately, that is like saying that a house is complete as soon as the foundation is laid.

Such a perspective is important:  If we are building, what kind of quality control do we want to have?  What is each person doing to see that the nation is built with excellence?

When you think of the strengths and qualities you want your nation to have?

Would you accept a list like:
Angry
Violent
Afraid
Self absorbed
Greedy
Apathetic
Complacent
Lazy
Corrupt
Isolationistic

OR
Would you prefer a list like:
Courageous
Noble
Generous
Respectful
Compassionate
Peaceful
Productive
Industrious
Honoring
Diligent

It would be tempting to lay the responsibility for the outcome on politicians, the media, corporations and government,
BUT,
You guessed it:  The real choice is in the hands of each voting citizen.

How will you vote?

IS THIS WHO YOU WANT FOR PRESIDENT???

I almost never make political comments; in fact, I stay as far away from political campaigns as I possibly can.  When it comes to someone promoting bigotry, hatred, scape goating and violence, however, I am willing to make an exception.
