THE FIRST THANKSGIVING MENU

Are any of these on your Thanksgiving menu this year?
They were in 1621, when the Pilgrims held their first feast, which lasted for three days:
cod
bass
Lobster
seal
swans
wild turkey
venison
corn
squash
other vegetables
wild roots
herbs and spices introduced by the Wampanoag
They might have had honey or maple sap for sweeteners.

No sweets, such as pies, cakes and other desserts – no sugar available for that.

 

Some of this was recorded in journals written by people who were there; some of it is conjecture, based on general information about the time period and location.

  1. “Ugh” to the seafood, for my taste. But if I’d experienced what those men and women had been through, finickiness would not have been in order, no doubt! We owe it to present-day pilgrims (similarly displaced by war and suffering and prejudice) to live (and eat) simply so that we have more resources to share with them. Voice of the Martyrs is one of our favorite deliverers to our persecuted family around the world. Thanks, Hannah, for this reminder of the humble celebration of our predecessors!
